Dr Ann Poynten is a Senior Staff Specialist at The Prince of Wales  Hospital and is Clinical Director of The Prince of Wales Diabetes Centre. She is accredited at The Prince of Wales  Private Hospital, has a private practice in Suite 20 and is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at The University of New South Wales.

Dr Poynten is an endocrinologist with interests in type 1 and type 2 diabetes and also has a general endocrinology practice. Ann is on call for Prince of Wales Hospital and manages patients as outpatient and inpatients with endocrine and diabetes related illnesses.

Ann graduated from The University of New South Wales  in 1991 with First Class Honours in Medicine. Her Endocrinology training was at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She then went on to PhD studies at The Garvan Institute of Medical Research and was awarded a PhD from the University of New South Wales in 2005. She has published in leading Endocrinology journals the in the areas of obesity, type 2 diabetes and lipid disorders. Current research interests include the NHMRC funded Detection of Diabetes in the Emergency Department, clinical trials in type 2 diabetes and projects investigating methods to detect of peripheral neuropathy in type 1 diabetes.

Medical student teaching and hospital resident and registrar teaching is a core part of her position. Ann is active in general practitioner ongoing education, especially in the management of type 2 diabetes in general practise. She is also interested in patient education and has edited a Chapter of “Diabetes for Dummies (Australian edition)”.
